November 4, 1913 – Born Byron Elsworth Barr in St. Cloud, Minn., on this date, actor “Gig Young won an Academy Award for his performance as a slimy dance-marathon emcee in the 1969 film They Shoot Horses, Don't They?”¹  “He took the name ‘Gig Young’ from the character he played in ‘The Gay Sisters.’ His films include ‘Game of Death,’ ‘Young at Heart,’ ‘The Hindenburg,’ ‘The Elite Killer,’ and [‘The Desk Set’ with Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy]. His work on television includes ‘The Rogues.’ He shot and killed his fifth wife, German actress Kim Schmidt, after 3 weeks of marriage, then committed suicide.”^2
