On This Date in Minnesota History: August 19

August 19, 1862 – A home known as Farther and Gay was a center of hospitality and happy family life for the short time Joseph Renshaw Brown, his half-Indian wife and their 12 children lived in it. On this date during the Sioux Uprising, the Browns were forced to flee their home, which was looted and burned by the attacking Indians. The ruins of the home are still standing on 145th Street between Granite Falls and Redwood Falls, Minn.

The ruins were added to the National Register of Historic Places on Aug. 3, 1986.
