On This Date in Minnesota History: September 30

September 30, 1912 – George Anderson, who became a resident of the Bemidji city jail earlier today following a complaint that he had been stealing, broke jail this evening in an unusual manner.

Jack Essler, who was filling in for George Denly this week on the police force, had trouble arresting Tommy Wilson, who was drunk and called on several men to help him. At the jail they placed Wilson in the cell and one of the men asked Essler, “Are you through with me now?”

Essler replied that he was. Anderson, who was unknown to Essler, at once asked “Are you through with me?” When told that he could go, Anderson left at once. By noon the next day, he had still not been apprehended.
