On This Date in Minnesota History: October 3

October 3, 1904 – While the family of Charles S. Pillsbury was seated at dinner this evening, a robber ransacked the rooms on the second floor of their residence and made good his escape with jewelry valued at over $1,000. While one man worked on the upper story, his confederate stood outside the window of the dining room watching the family and the servants, ready to give the warning should any one leave the room.

Entrance to the house was made through a side door fronting on the driveway. The door was locked, but it was opened with a skeleton key.

September 30, 1912 – George Anderson, who became a resident of the Bemidji city jail earlier today following a complaint that he had been stealing, broke jail this evening in an unusual manner.

Jack Essler, who was filling in for George Denly this week on the police force, had trouble arresting Tommy Wilson, who was drunk and called on several men to help him. At the jail they placed Wilson in the cell and one of the men asked Essler, “Are you through with me now?”

Essler replied that he was. Anderson, who was unknown to Essler, at once asked “Are you through with me?” When told that he could go, Anderson left at once. By noon the next day, he had still not been apprehended.

On This Date in Minnesota History: September 29

September 29, 2003 – Two people were shot in the Hennepin County Government Center by a St. Paul woman who was there for a court hearing on restraining orders she'd filed against her shooting victims over her late father’s estate. Susan Berkovitz shot her cousin, Shelley Joseph-Kordell, and Kordell's attorney, Richard Hendrickson, with a .38-caliber Smith and Wesson revolver she'd bought the past summer at a gun show.

According to witnesses, Berkovitz walked up to Hendrickson in the lobby and shot him in the neck at close range. She then followed Kordell into the ladies' restroom and shot her.  “Both Kordell and Hendrickson identified Berkovitz as their attacker. Kordell died about two hours after the shooting.”

On This Date in Minnesota History: September 27

September 27, 1906 – Charles Fullerton, 51 years old and well known in Bemidji, was instantly killed yesterday around 11 a.m., about a mile and a half north of Puposky, Minn., being run over by a train on the Minneapolis, Red Lake & Manitoba Railway.

A painter by trade, Fullerton had been to Puposky and walked from that place to collect some money that was due him at the home of a friend a mile and a half north of Puposky. He was returning to Puposky walking in the middle of the railroad track, when he was hit by a train. The train crew saw the man walking on the track, but as the latter was deaf, he did not hear the train approaching and did not attempt to move from between the rails.

Every effort was made to stop the train, but it was not possible. Fullerton was picked up from between the engine and the first car on the train and an examination showed that he was badly hurt about the head, that both arms were broken and that he was injured internally.

The train was immediately headed for Bemidji and the body brought there. The injuries caused instant death.

No blame can possibly be attached to the railroad company or any of its employees.

Bemidji Daily Pioneer; “Deaf Man Run Down and Killed by Train. Charles Fullerton Meets Death Beneath Engine Wheels Yesterday on M. R. L. & M. Was Walking Between Rails. Could  Not Hear Warning. Dead Man Well Known in Bemidji, Where He Will be Buried.”; Sept. 28, 1906; p. 1.
