February 26, 1969 – St. Paul Pioneer Press writer Donald Giese was sentenced to 90 days in jail for contempt of court after refusing to reveal his sources for articles he wrote about the murder of Carol Thompson. The sentence was stayed by Judge Douglas Amdahl of Hennepin County District Court to permit an appeal to the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Convicted of hiring someone to kill his wife Carol in 1963, T. Eugene Thompson was seeking a new trial. “He alleges that St. Paul police and the Ramsay County attorney’s office gave information to the press [that] resulted in publicity depriving him of a fair trial.”

Giese refused to reveal if he had talked with police or the county attorney’s office, saying it would “violate journalistic ethics and tend to deprive him of news sources if he were to answer.”

February 25, 1916 - Mrs. Leora May Brabetz, wife of Albert Brabetz, the Nymore barber who several weeks ago became intoxicated and lay down in the snow, freezing his hands and feet so bad that he may not live, has commenced action against Emory Jarvis of Nymore for $10,000, alleging that he sold liquor to Brabetz, causing the unconsciousness and the injuries.

Jarvis is reported missing and no trace of him has been found. It is believed that he has gone to Canada. Before leaving he transferred his property to his wife, and Attorney Carl L. Heffron, who is acting for Mrs. Brabetz, has placed an attachment on all property belonging to Jarvis.

Brabetz is near death at St. Anthony’s Hospital. Should he die, it is stated that a case of manslaughter will be brought against Jarvis.

Brabetz was found in the snow near his home on the morning of Feb. 1 with his hands and feet frozen. He is alleged to have stated that he had been drinking whiskey at Jarvis’ soft drink parlor. Brabetz is the father of two small children.

February 22, 1956 – “No Senate tradition has been more steadfastly maintained than the annual reading of President George Washington’s 1796 Farewell Address. In this letter to “Friends and Citizens,” Washington warned that the forces of geographical sectionalism, political factionalism, and interference by foreign powers in the nation's domestic affairs threatened the stability of the Republic. He urged Americans to subordinate sectional jealousies to common national interests.”

“Every year since 1896, the Senate has observed Washington's Birthday by selecting one of its members, alternating parties, to read the 7,641-word statement in legislative session. Delivery generally takes about 45 minutes.”

On this date, Washington’s Farewell Address was read by Minn. Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, who later became the 38th Vice President of the U. S. during the Johnson administration from 1965 to 1969.
