On This Date in Minnesota History: September 15

September 15, 1913 – Seven well-known citizens of Lester Prairie, Minn. were arrested today, throwing the town and surrounding countryside into excitement.

Following a picnic held yesterday, warrants were sworn out by J. F. Hall, a detective from St. Paul, for the following: Henry Emme, secretary of the board of education; John Heimerl, hardware dealer; Albert Briesemeister, liveryman; J. H. Wolters, Eugene Engels, Joe Schultz, saloon men, and Otto Filbrandt, a blacksmith.

The first five men are charged with selling liquor and the other two with aiding and abetting. They were taken by Frank Klaus to Glencoe and their hearing was set for next Monday.

This is regarded here as a test case in the campaign waged in Lester Prairie and McLeod County by the faction known as the law enforcement element. Rev. H. J. Saltow has been active in the campaign in Lester Prairie, and the movement is said to have gained much support throughout the district.

The Minneapolis Morning Tribune; “Liquor Law Violation Alleged. Seven Prominent Residents of Lester Prairie, Minn., Are Arrested.”; Sept. 16, 1913; p. 3.

On This Date in Minnesota History: September 14

September 14, 1915 – The steamer Onoka, loaded with 110,000 bushels of wheat consigned to Buffalo, NY, by the Capitol Elevator Company, sank this afternoon off Knife Island, about 14 miles out of Duluth, almost without a moment’s warning. None of the crew was lost.

It is not known whether the cargo was to fill an export order or demands of Buffalo millers.

When it was discovered that the steamer was sinking, Capt. W. H. Dunn ordered the boats out and the crew left the ship. They were picked up shortly after by the Standard Oil steamer Renown and brought to Duluth, reaching there about 5:45 p.m.

Capt. Dunn reported to the agent of the Onoka that he did not know the cause of the vessel’s sinking at this time.

The value of the ship was undetermined. She was 288 feet long and had a gross tonnage of 2,164.
