On This Date in Minnesota History: October 15

October 15, 1970 – The Taylors Falls, Minn., public library was named to the National Register of Historical Places on this date.

“Built originally as a residence and tailor shop for John Jacob Spengler, the house was sold in 1887 to the Taylors Falls Library Association for use as the town library.

“The single-story, wood-frame building was built in 1854 in the Eastlake style. The front room with its barrel-vault ceiling served as Spengler's tailor shop, which made uniforms for Taylors Falls soldiers during the Civil War. Spengler and his family lived in the back room, decorated with oak-grained pine woodwork and a pressed tin ceiling.

“Few changes were made to the building when it was converted to a library in 1887. There the Taylors Falls Library Association housed its collection, catalogued in order of acquisition beginning with a Bible. The library, filled with travel diaries, children's stories, tales of adventure, mysteries and novels, proved popular with townspeople and summer visitors alike.”

On This Date in Minnesota History: October 14

October 14, 1916 – Today Nymore ceased and is now a part of the city of Bemidji.

Mayor Charles W. Vandersluis signed the ordinance providing for the annexation of the village and the new ordinance is published in the Pioneer today.

At the meeting of the city council next Monday an ordinance will be presented, providing for the wards and councilmen for Nymore. It is believed that Nymore will be included in one ward known as the Fifth Ward.

Police and fire protection will be given the Nymore district the same as any other district, beginning today. A police officer will be names soon to patrol that district.

The village of Nymore was organized in about 1903 by a Mr. Nye and Mr. Moore, who formed the townsite company. They gave the village the name of Nye-moore or Nymore.

During the past few years the residents noted the advantages of being annexed to Bemidji and action was taken early this spring for the annexation. Debts were taken up and bonds were issued. The village government ceased to exist Sept. 30 of this year.

The Bemidji Daily Pioneer; “Nymore is Now Part of Bemidji; Mayor Signs New Annexation Bill. Wards to Be Assigned and Ordinance Presented at Next Council Meeting. Village Organized in 1903 by Moore and Nye. Police and Fire Protection Already Begun in new District; Will Be Fifth Ward.”; October 14, 1916; p. 1.

Signs of Nymore are still available in Bemidji.

On This Date in Minnesota History: October 13

October 13, 1920 – Winning the distinction of piloting into his home town, the first plane to be used in regular air mail service between the Twin Cities and Chicago, William Carroll, the only Minneapolis pilot in the air mail service, landed at the Speedway Field late this afternoon. The plane, a De Havilland with twin motors, is one of the type built for the Post Office department, to be used only on the Twin Cities-St. Louis line. Carroll served for three years in France with the Royal Flying Corps, which he joined in 1916.

Returning to Chicago by rail tomorrow, the Minneapolis pilot will bring back a second plane, in readiness for the start of regular air mail service next Monday. He will be accompanied on his return trip by a second pilot, and two other pilots will remain in Chicago. At a conference sometime this week, C. F. Egge, superintendent of air mail, Postmaster Purdy, H. M. Garner and W. H. Brooks will discuss with Minneapolis jobbers, bankers and grain men the mail schedule best suited to their needs.

Once started, the service will continue without interruption. Two reserve pilots and three reserve planes have been provided to insure against delay by accident. The flying distance of 360 miles between the Twin Cities and Chicago will take from four to five hours.

Originally a concrete race track, the 160 acres of land inside the track became Speedway Field. It was first used as an airfield in 1920, and eventually grew into the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

October 12, 1918 – Rather than being burned alive during the Cloquet/Moose Lake fire and crazed by the loss of his home and farm at Grand Lake, St. Louis County, Robert Bruce Postal shot and killed Mary Van Tasel, his common-law wife, and then committed suicide.

Postal shot Van Tasel through the head, decapitating her. He was about 60 while she was approximately 55 years old.

The origin of “going postal”?

On This Date in Minnesota History: October 11

October 11, 1917 – The first arrests of “slackers” in Beltrami County took place this morning when Deputy Sheriffs Denley and Skinvik went to Turtle River and brought back two alleged offenders, one giving the name of Joe Lyons and the other Otto Hoffmeisterer.

The pair will be arraigned tomorrow, and in the meantime will occupy cells in the county jail.

Hoffmeisterer is of German parentage and was born and reared in the United States. He explained to Sheriff Johnson that the reason he had failed to register was because he had been told not to. He also made admissions that proved he was within the law as to age.

Lyons says he is a Canadian and didn’t have to register.

The sheriff’s office has been quietly getting a line on slackers in Bemidji and Beltrami County and is actively making personal investigations. Several people are under suspicion and being watched; more arrests are expected to be made.
