October 22, 1913 – Military honors were accorded Lieut. Charles L. Steinmetz, who was killed while on duty in Manila Sept. 3, and who was buried this afternoon in Crystal Lake Cemetery.

A detail of soldiers from Battery D, Fifth United States field artillery, was sent from Fort Snelling to pay the last honors to the dead officer.

After the services at the cemetery musician Serio sounded taps and the last salute was fired by a squad under the command of Ordnance Sergeant Cudmore.

Mrs. Lottie M. Steinmetz, widow of the late officer, who brought his body in a leaden casket from Manila, with her sister, Miss Christmau, and her mother, Mrs. E. Christmau, were at the funeral.

October 21, 1915 – Hibbing, “the poor little rich village,” is bidding farewell to its 48 saloons today. This morning at 8 o’clock, federal authorities clamped down the lid called for in the Indian treaty of 1855, thus adding to Hibbing’s troubles occasioned by controversies with the mining companies over municipal income. There are fully 300 person in Hibbing engaged in the liquor traffic who will lose their jobs as a result.

Chisholm, Floodwood and Kewatin, other mining villages on the Mesaba range, are preparing for the same farewell. Nearly 100 saloons will be closed, making close to 300 under the treaty lid.

H. A. Larson of Denver, J. B. Brandt and D. H. Ellis of Minneapolis, special agents of the Indian Bureau, notified the saloonkeepers of Hibbing it was time to close their doors for good. Some of the saloons in Hibbing have never been closed, temperance workers say. They say that the saloons have been kept open Sundays and all night.

The Indian treaty does not cover the rest of the Mesaba range. Virginia, Eveleth, Biwabik, Aurora, Gilbert and many other range towns are beyond its limits.

The Minneapolis Morning Tribune; “Hibbing Saloons Out, Indian Law Invoked. Federal authorities Clamp Down Lid on Forty-six Dram-shops. More Towns to Follow. Three hundred Persons in Hibbing Alone Put Out of Employment.”; October 21, 1915; p. 1.

*October 18, 1906 – The prison-born babe of Mrs. Stella Brennan is leaving for Mich. today with her maternal grandmother.

County Attorney Al J. Smith had made it clear in August that she could not keep the baby, backing it up by citing the law that holds “a person sent to prison for life is thereafter civilly dead.”1

Born on July 26, Ruth Brennan has been weaned from her mother and is healthy, strong and good-natured. Mrs. Brennan is delighted that her mother is to have her child, and is looking forward to the time when she will be united with her daughter outside of prison.

Ruth Brennan2

The state is paying all expenses connected with the transfer of the baby girl, and a load will be lifted from the shoulders of the officials when she reaches her new home in Mich. Satisfaction is felt all around that the little one is placed in such capable hands as those of her grandmother, Mrs. Owens. Mrs. Brennan says her prison home will be much lonelier with her baby gone, but she recognizes that she cannot keep Ruth with her in prison and is reconciled in the hope that she will eventually be able to claim her again.
