On This Date in Minnesota History: October 27

October 27, 1912 – Rochester, Minn., was visited by a disastrous fire early this morning that totally destroyed a half block of business buildings and for a time threatened to wipe out the entire section of that district. The loss will reach $50,000 or more. C.D. Brown, president of the city council, was the heaviest loser, his hack and livery equipment and his auto garage were destroyed. The W.L. Bailey blacksmith shop and Barber’s paint works were burned to the ground.

Twenty-two horses were burned to death, four of which belonged to private parties and 18 to Mr. Brown, including Alphonso, a racer well known on southern Minnesota tracks.

Ed Parker, an employee of the barn, slept while the fire was raging and barely escaped with his life. The fire had gained terrific headway before being discovered, making it impossible to free the animals in the barn, where the conflagration was at its worst. As soon as it was known that the horses were doomed, many of the beasts that could be reached were shot to death.

While battling with the flames, Fire Chief John Boylhart met with serious injury when a nozzle on a hose line broke, striking him in the side. He was quickly removed to his home, where it was found three ribs were broken and he may have suffered internal injuries, which will be determined by x-rays.

October 24, 1877 - A Minnesotan African American and executive political assistant, William F. (Billy) Williams was born on this date in St. Paul, MN. He was a graduate of Mechanic Arts High School and Hess Business College in St. Paul. An exceptional athlete, Williams was a semi-pro baseball player. In 1904, Williams joined the staff of Governor John A. Johnson as his personal assistant. Though he wished to pursue his talents on the baseball field, he was equally adept as an administrator. He also wanted to take care of his family, a pact he made with his mother. A skillful communicator, Williams was retained in that position through 14 Minnesota governors for a total of 53 years.

William F. (Billy) Williams

Williams was active and voiced forceful opposition to racism, particularly in the military. He was chairman of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety during the World War I, retiring in 1957. Upon his departure, the state Legislature passed a special act giving him a pension for life.

William F. Williams died in 1963.

October 23, 1907 – The Oriental Limited, the Great Northern coast train that left St. Paul this morning, was wrecked in Moorhead, Minn., this evening at 6:30.

The engine mail car, baggage car and smoker had passed over the Eighth Street switch when an unknown person was seen to throw the switch, throwing the day coach, colonists’ sleeper and front trucks of the dining care from the track.

The train was just pulling out of the depot, so it fortunately had gained little speed and was quickly stopped. Outside of a general shaking up, no one was injured. The equipment was badly damaged and the tracks torn up for a considerable distance causing several hours delay.
