On This Date in Minnesota History: July 15

July 15, 1911 – Burglars visited the St. Louis Hotel and Saloon of Johnson Bros., in Buhl, Minn., early this morning. They took not only the cash register valued at $250 from the saloon, but walked off with the $225 in cash left in the money receptacle. There do not appear to be any clues.

The men who turned the trick are believed to have left town as some strangers were seen driving rapidly from the village about 2:30 a.m., and belief is they made their escape before the burglary was discovered. They are supposed to have gained entrance to the place between 1 and 2 a.m., finding ingress easy because the proprietors claim the help failed to properly lock up the saloon part of the establishment of the hotel from where the register and money were taken.

Telephone messages have been sent to other range towns and to Duluth warning the police to be on the lookout for the burglaries or anyone trying to dispose of a cash register.

The Duluth Herald; “Register and Cash Stolen. Buhl Burglars Get $250 Money Holder and $225 in Cash. St. Louis Hotel Saloon Burglarized During Early Hours of Friday.”; July 15, 1911; p. 10.

On This Date in Minnesota History: July 14

July 14, 1912 – The Oriental Limited, the Great Northern coast train, was wrecked between Ashby and Melby, Minn., 75 miles east of Fargo, at 1:45 this afternoon. Fireman Campbell, aged 35, of Melrose, Minn., was killed instantly, crushed by the tender, as he attempted to jump from his engine.

Railroad Map; Ashby and Melby in Upper Left Corner1

As the train rounded a sharp curve, flanked on one hand by a high bank and by a deep swamp and a 30-foot embankment on the other, the engine left the track. It was half buried in the steep wall of earth. The train was travelling at a good rate of speed and two day coaches, the smoker, a diner, two Pullmans, and a baggage car plunged over the embankment straight ahead and landed in a swamp 30 feet below.

Passengers were uninjured by the fall, aside from minor bruises and cuts. The force of the fall was reduced to practically nothing by the water and mud of the swamp. Men and women scrambled through the coach doors and windows and waded to safety through mud and water.

Shortly after the coaches landed in the swamp one of the acetylene tanks exploded and the gas caught fire, spreading to the coaches. The flames spread to the other coaches that had landed in the swamp. Passengers and crew fought the flames while standing knee deep in the mud and water. All of the five coaches and the baggage car were entirely destroyed by the flames. Men rescued as much baggage as possible from the burning coaches.

Three coaches remained on the track: the parlor car and two Pullmans. These cars collided with the engine tender, but were not damaged. Occupants of these coaches gave aid to those who were thrown into the swamp.

A terrific wind and rain storm swept the country near Ashby earlier this afternoon. Telegraph and telephone lines were put out of commission. In many places portions of the roadbed were washed away. Slippery rails are held accountable for the wreck by officials. Two heavy freight trains were run over the main track just before the Oriental Limited was due and officials say these trains may have damaged the roadbed already weakened by excessive rains.

July 12, 1996 – Wearing a white patch over his right eye, Kirby Puckett announced his retirement from baseball on this date. He was 36 years old.

“I was told I would never make it because I’m too short,” the 5’8” Puckett said at his retirement press conference. “Well, I’m still too short, but I’ve got 10 All-Star games, two World Series championships, and I’m a very happy and contented guy. It doesn’t matter what your height is, it’s what’s in your heart.”

Puckett passed away from a stroke on March 6, 2006.

On This Date in Minnesota History: July 11

July 11, 1912 – Miss Nellie Harris of St. Paul is not Mrs. George Monahan of St. Paul, although she missed by so narrow a margin that her murmured “yes” was all that was necessary. She did not say “yes”; instead she threw the engagement ring on the table in the court commissioner’s office, left the near-bridegroom and the witnesses agape, and stalked from the room.

The wedding was slated for this afternoon. Mrs. Clara Tilly was there as matron of honor, and a couple of courthouse attaches had been drafted as witnesses. The court commissioner, in his best voice, had finished the bridegroom’s part of the ceremony and the bridegroom had made the correct replies.

Then the official turned to the bride. He propounded the usual question, but the girl hesitated, and that hesitation cost Mr. Monahan his bride. Miss Harris said never a word, but taking off her engagement ring she laid on the desk and started for the door.

Mrs. Tilly and Mr. Monahan called to her, but there was no more hesitation, and the ceremony was over.
