On This Date in Minnesota History: September 25

September 25, 1914 – Falling off a scaffold on the new Mesaba dock, No. 5 at Thirty-fourth Ave. West, Duluth, at 10 this morning, laborer Stans Senkoski, 36, fell into one of the pockets and down into the water, a total distance of 85 feet, escaping without the slightest injury. That he was not killed is considered miraculous by fellow employees who saw the accident.

After falling into the water Senkoski was saved from drowning by Lyle Clapper, superintendent at the dock, who jumped in after him. Senkoski suffered no injury whatsoever and after going to his room at the New Clarendon Hotel and changing clothes, he returned to his work this afternoon.

The accident happened when Senkoski was about to step on a scaffold off a small walk at the top of the dock, used by the workmen. He broke the scaffold and, grabbing one of the boards, hung for an instant and when the plank broke loose fell into the pocket and then down into the water.

Superintendent Clapper saw the accident and without hesitation jumped in after his workman and saved the latter from drowning.

Senkoski has been working on the dock for the last three months. He is unmarried.
