On This Date in Minnesota History: December 17


December 17, 1919 – More than a score of persons were injured in wrecks at Springfield and Eyota on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad this morning.

A fireman was scalded and a news agent and baggage man were injured when west bound passenger train No. 503, due in Owatonna at 10:57 a.m., and east bound passenger train No. 516, which leaves Owatonna at 7:20 a.m., crashed together near the Eyota station platform. Some of the coaches were partly demolished and 14 passengers were reported injured. This wreck happened at 11 a.m. Both trains were running behind time.

 Train No. 516 had been made up at Mankato after having wrecked at Springfield at 4:30 a.m. this morning. A broken rail is believed to have caused it to jump the tracks at Springfield. Several injured persons were taken to Springfield for emergency treatment.
