On This Date in Minnesota History: February 13

February 13, 1909 – President Theodore Roosevelt has created a great forest reserve in northern Minnesota, the “Superior National Forest,” covering 909,734 acres, the largest government reserve in the country east of the Rocky Mountains.

1

The reserve lies in two tracts, one comprising about 20 townships in the northeastern corner of St. Louis County, bordering on the Rainy River; the other tract to the east, partly in Lake County and partly in Cook County, reaching almost to Lake Superior This tract does not reach the boundary country.

The new reserve is much larger than the one at Cass Lake, the only one previously established in Minn. The Cass Lake Reserve takes in only 100,000 acres. The land set aside is nearly all timbered, being general rocky and unfit for cultivation.

2

It is desired that the legislature forbid killing big game in this territory, which is a great breeding ground for moose. Such action by Minn. would practically turn the reserve into a great national park.
