January 5, 1911 – Duluth Police Patrol Officer Harry
A. “Chesmore was shot and killed while transporting two juvenile suspects back
to Duluth from Superior, Wisconsin, on a train. He was sitting with the two
suspects and, when he was distracted, one of the suspects shot him. The two
fled but were apprehended again and sent to prison. One of the suspects died in
prison of tuberculosis and the other died of the same disease shortly after
being released to his parents.”

January 4, 1970 - The Vikings defeated the Browns, 27-7, in the NFL Championship Game on [this date] at Metropolitan Stadium. January 1, 19121 – Walter H. Deubner invented the shopping bag.
“Deubner ran a small grocery store in St. Paul, and was looking for a way to
give his business a boost.”2 Observing his customers, he noticed
they purchased only what they could carry. He came up with a way to help them
buy more items: a paper bag with cord running through it for strength. “Deubner
patented his product and within three years, by 1915, was selling over a
million shopping bags a year.”2

On This Date in Minnesota History: December 30
December 30, 1995 – Anne Barber Dunlap went
missing on this date after purportedly telling her husband Brad that she was
going shopping at the Mall of America in Bloomington. Her body was found January
1, 1996, in the trunk of her car in the K-Mart parking lot on West Lake St. in
Minneapolis. She had been stabbed repeatedly in the neck and the throat. Her
murder has never been solved.
