On This Date in Minnesota History: October 16

October 16, 1913 – Eighteen New England women have written to Minneapolis Mayor Wallace Nye asking him to help them in their search for husbands.

A story in the Eastern newspapers declaring that 500 Minnesota men were looking for wives and that Miss Charlotte Smith, head of the Women’s Trade Board of Boston, had asked James J. Hill to furnish free railroad transportation to 500 New England women to answer the call, led to the inquiries.

Every mail brings inquiries to Mayor Nye. Today he received nine letters from all parts of New England. The writers say that they are young women looking for industrious husbands who would be able to support them.

Only one of the applicants required wealth as a qualification. The tone of the others seemed like a longing for a home.

The Minneapolis Morning Tribune; “Women Long for Husbands. Eastern Newspaper Story Starts Anxious Maids to Writing to Mayor.”; October 17, 1913; p. 11.
