December 21, 1922 – Minnesota jurist Pierce Butler was confirmed as an Associate Justice to the United States Supreme Court on this date by a wide margin of 61 to 8. He is notable for being the first Justice from Minnesota, and for being a Democrat appointed by a Republican president.

December 19, 1957 – “Governor Orville L. Freeman appointed L. Howard Bennett to a municipal judgeship in Minneapolis, making him the first African American judge appointed in Minnesota.”

After his campus appearance in 1959, Martin Luther King Jr. was interviewed by L. Howard Bennett, a local civil rights leader and the first African American judge in Minnesota, for local educational television. On This Date in Minnesota History: December 17


December 17, 1919 – More than a score of persons were injured in wrecks at Springfield and Eyota on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad this morning.

A fireman was scalded and a news agent and baggage man were injured when west bound passenger train No. 503, due in Owatonna at 10:57 a.m., and east bound passenger train No. 516, which leaves Owatonna at 7:20 a.m., crashed together near the Eyota station platform. Some of the coaches were partly demolished and 14 passengers were reported injured. This wreck happened at 11 a.m. Both trains were running behind time.

 Train No. 516 had been made up at Mankato after having wrecked at Springfield at 4:30 a.m. this morning. A broken rail is believed to have caused it to jump the tracks at Springfield. Several injured persons were taken to Springfield for emergency treatment.

On This Date in Minnesota History: December 16


December 16, 1904 – Itasca County comes to the front with a record breaking crop of wolf bounties. County Auditor E. J. Farrell today called at the state auditor’s office and presented certificates showing that his county had paid bounties of $7.50 for female wolves and $2.50 for male wolves, and that the state’s share of the bounty payment on the total would be $1,391.50. The payment will cover more than a year’s crop. The state pays $7.50 for female wolves and $2.50 for the scalps of male wolves.
