August 27, 1980 – Eveleth’s Resurrection Church, originally called Holy Family Church, was named to the National Register of Historical Places on this date. A Gothic Revival brick-and-stone church designed by A. F. Wasielewski, it was built in 1909 as a religious, cultural, and social center for the Slovenian community.

Resurrection Church, Eveleth, Minn.

Resurrection Church, originally named Holy Family Church, began on this site as a small wooden structure in 1899. For two years prior, monthly services were conducted in the Eveleth town hall by Father Matthias Bilban, who served the entire Mesabi Range under noted pioneer missionary Joseph Buh.

Reverend James Hogan, the church’s first residential pastor, was assigned in 1903. Finding it difficult to communicate effectively with a predominately Slovenian congregation, the Irish priest was replaced by Father Bilban, who spoke Slovenian fluently. In 1904, the church was designated one of only four national Slovenian churches in the United States. English speaking members petitioned the diocese for their own parish. They established St. Patrick’s Church with Father Hogan ad pastor.

The number of immigrant mine workers had increased significantly by 1909, warranting a larger church.
A. F. Wasielewski, an Anoka, Minnesota, church builder, constructed this Gothic brick structure, which cost $32,025.Thousands of people attended the dedication on May 29, 1910, making a procession 17 blocks long.

In 1978, St. Patrick’s Church and Immaculate Conception Church, established by Eveleth Italians in 1914, merged with Holy Family Church, uniting Eveleth Catholics as one congregation. This structure, renamed Resurrection Church, was retained as their place of worship. The other two churches were later dismantled.

August 26, 1947 – “High above the [Minnesota State Fair] grandstand turf, Lloyd Rellim rode a bicycle back and forth across a narrow bar at one end of a 30-foot-long metal frame. Another performer twirled on rings and a trapeze bar at the other. Near the end of the performance, the frame jerked as it was being lowered for Rellim’s dismount. He lost his balance and fell 75 feet to” his death.

August 25, 1970 – A bomb scare in the fourth inning at Met Stadium delayed the Boston Red Sox vs Minn. Twins game 43 minutes on this date.

A crowd of 17,697 evacuated the stands after an announcement over the public address system stated that a telephoned warning had been received that a bomb was due to go off. The evacuation was orderly and without panic with about 2,000 fans, players, police and vendors gathered in the center-field. The rest milled about in the parking lot. The bomb was supposed to go off at 10:30 PM, so after a 27 minute wait, the game was resumed at 10:57 PM.

On this Date in Minnesota History: August 23

August 23, 1984 – The McLeod County Courthouse in Glencoe, Minn., was added to the National Register of Historic Places on this date.

“The county's first court session was held in a log school house shortly after the county's organization in 1856.  Years later, the village of Glencoe contributed $2,000 to the county to build the 1876 courthouse that forms the core of the present building. Between 1876 and 1982, the county added to, expanded, and remodeled the original $10,397 building six times, at a cost of about $3.5 million."

  1

The impression of the building from the front is of a 1909 vintage, brick Beaux Arts building with a brick box joined to it by a recessed two-story glass section.  W.F. Kinney of Stebbins, Kinney and Halden, designed the 1909 classic columned renovation and Emil M. Jacobson was the builder.

  2

The 1958 windowless addition was by Hammel & Green of St. Paul and is compatible in proportion to the original building though completely contemporary.”
