On This Date in Minnesota History: July 23

July 23, 1910 – Today lightening partially wrecked the Radisson school building on Park Point, damaged Duluth’s incinerating plant to such an extent that it will be unable to operate for several weeks and burned a residence.

No one was injured, but the damage will be several thousand dollars.

In a terrific rain storm that accompanied the thunderstorm, streets were flooded, unfinished street improvements were interrupted and many blocks of the steepest avenues washed out so as to be impassable.

The damage of streets will be in the neighborhood of $10,000.

The Great Northern power plant was shut down for a short time owing to the severity of the storm, and hundreds of small boats in the harbor had difficulty in reaching shore safely.

July 22, 1912 – Edith Stockman, 18 years old, is near death at a local Duluth hospital, as the result of being stopped by a policeman this evening while she was walking down the street in her sleep wearing only her nightgown. The girl left her bed and was five blocks from her home before she encountered the officer. Stockman was walking leisurely toward the business center of town and the policeman, realizing her condition, attempted to waken her gently. As soon as he touched her she came to with a start, and screaming wildly for help, went into convulsions.

July 21, 1861 – Battle of Bull Run
“The First Minn. fell in at 2 a.m. and started marching four hours later. The regiment was ordered to support Rickett’s Battery in an attack on Henry House Hill. Companies ‘A’ and ‘F’ led the attack, and were separated from the regiment to the right of the battery by the confusion in deploying the guns. Colonel German ordered the men to hold fire on the attacking 33rd Virginia because he thought they were Yankees. Rickett’s battery was lost and recaptured several times before finally falling to the rebels. Javan Irvine, a civilian attached to Co. ‘A,’ captured the Lt. Col. of the 2nd Mississippi, the highest ranking Confederate taken that day. Sgt. John Merritt of Co. ‘K’ was awarded the Medal of Honor for taking brief possession of a rebel flag. After discovering that they were isolated, Lt. Col Miller ordered the two companies to retreat. The regiment then covered the western flank of the Union retreat.

Sgt. John Merritt*

“The First Minnesota was one of the last regiments to leave the battlefield, and suffered the highest casualties of any northern regiment: 48 killed, 83 wounded, 23 wounded and missing, and 30 missing (the number of missing taken prisoner is uncertain – most returned to the unit).”

The Court finds that members of the tribe cannot vote in county elections because they have not ‘yielded obedience and submission to the [Minnesota] laws.’”

Birchmont Beach Hotel, Bemidji, Minn.2

The pictures are being taken of Northern Minnesota to exhibit at the Herald’s industrial exposition in Chicago and will also be shown in about 2,000 theaters in Illinois and Iowa as well as theaters in the southern part of this state.

The pictures will also be shown in cities in the east. The purpose is to show people of the east the people and farms and cities of the middle west.

The pictures will do much to bring in settlers to the Bemidji area and will do much for “Boosting Northern Minnesota.”

July 17, 1902 - Willis Carrier designed the first modern air-conditioning system that changed the way we work, live and play. Carrier’s invention, solved the problem of how to control the indoor environment, and helped promote health, comfort and global productivity.1

Willis Carrier2

The first residential application of air conditioning was used in the Minneapolis, Minn., mansion of Charles G. Gates,1 a tycoon who had made his fortune in barb wire, railroads and oil.3 Considered by many to be one of the, if not the largest mansion in Minneapolis, the home overlooked Lake of the Isles; it was demolished in 1933.3
