On This Date in Minnesota History: November 5

November 5, 1914 – O. M. Palmquist, cashier of the Citizen’s State Bank of Dassel, was shot to death in the private room of the bank this afternoon between the hours of 2 and 4 by an unknown assailant. The body of the cashier, lying face down, was discovered by a depositor, who investigated the premises after having waited in vain for the cashier at his window.

The assassin fired from behind and the bullet entered the left side of the neck and lodged over his right eye.

No money was missing and there was no evidence of a struggle. The victim was evidently shot without the slightest warning. He is not known to have had any enemies. The theory is advanced that a robber committed the deed and was frightened away.

There is but the faintest clue to the possible murderer. A man was seen running from the bank to the depot just in time to catch the 4:50 train for the East. No description of him was obtainable.

Mr. Palmquist was 55 years old. He was married on July 11, 1914 to Mrs. Della Rudberg, a widow.

The Minneapolis Morning Tribune; “Bank Cashier of Dassel Is Slain in Private Office. O. M. Palmquist Shot From Behind by Unknown Assassin Who Escapes. No Money Missing; No Evidence of Struggle—Man Seen Running From the Place.”; Nov. 6, 1914; p. 1.

November 2, 1898  Organized cheerleading began on this date when University of Minnesota student Johnny Campbell led the crowd in cheering on the football team:

1

"Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity,
Minn-e-So-Tah!"

Johnny Campbell2

Soon after, the University of Minnesota organized a "yell leader" squad of six male students, who still use Campbell's original cheer.
