On This Date in Minnesota History: March 17

March 17, 1911 – Twelve men, experienced in the service of Minneapolis express companies, left Minneapolis this evening for New York as strikebreakers, helping to cover for the 5,000 Teamsters on strike in that city. The Wells Fargo Company furnished the largest quota with six men—three from the main office and the remaining from the depot force. Minneapolis officials of the company believe the strike will be ended within the week and have promised the men that they will not be kept in New York for a longer time.

The strikebreakers will be employed mostly at platform and clerical work in the metropolis, and the New York men they relieve will be placed as drivers to cover for the striking men. This action is necessary because of the New York statutes, which forbid teamsters to drive in that city unless they have been residents for a year and pass examinations on the traffic regulations.

Men from all the larger cities of the U. S. employed by the express companies are being forced to go to New York on pains of losing their positions. It was said in the depot office of the Wells Fargo Company this evening that 12 men had been ordered from Kansas City, 10 from St. Paul and 40 from Chicago. Only single employees were asked to join the ranks of the strikebreakers.

There is considerable feeling against the Minneapolis men who will assist the companies in their New York trouble. One of the foremen of the Milwaukee depot platform force resigned tonight because of this trouble.

Happy St. Urho's Day!

On This Date in Minnesota History: March 16

March 16, 1903 – Cleveland-Cliffs Mining Company officials are in Duluth today to arrange for the opening of the Crosby Mine.

“Contracts will be let this week for the stripping and excavating that will be necessary before mining operations commence,” said M. M. Duncan.

J. Yungbluth, J. S. Minnie, J. E. Japling and Duncan, all of Ishpeming, Mich., came this morning at 11:00, and with others arriving later this afternoon, they will leave for Hibbing in two days to look over the property. The trip is being made at this time as a stretch of unimproved country must be traveled over, and the members want to make the trip before the spring break.

“That’s what we are here for,” said Yungbluth, when asked if the party was to look over the Crosby Mine, which the company acquired the working interest in last January.

“The opening of the mine will start as soon as it is possible to put the men and machines on it,” he continued. “They are now building the boarding houses and the sheds and other buildings to care for the men who will be employed in the clearing work when it is started. We are going up now to avoid the break in the season which is due in a week or so, and would shut us off from a visit for a fortnight.”

“We are here to figure on letting contracts,” said Duncan. “We will let them this week. None have been let so far, but several bids are in.”

“I can’t tell just when work will begin. It depends upon when the spur railroad track is completed, and I do not know what shape that work is in now. What we are in here for now is to ascertain exactly the shape things are in at the property, and so we cannot give out much information about it.”

It is more than likely that ore will be taken out this summer in large quantities. The work of getting the mine ready for operation will be rushed, and it is expected that the railroad will be completed within a few weeks.

Senator E. B. Hawkins has been sent for and will arrive in Duluth from St. Paul the middle of the week, when the bids are opened. Other prominent mining men are collecting at the Spalding Hotel to see the Cleveland-Cliffs officials, and George H. Crosby, who returned from California last week, will probably accompany the party to the mining property.

On This Date in Minnesota History: March 15

March 15, 1910 – The vast estate of General Samuel F. Hersey, who died in Bangor, Me., 35 years ago after creating an Eastern and Western trust to handle his property until 1900, is now closed up by two decrees filed today in Washington County district court in Stillwater.

General Hersey was largely interested as a pioneer lumberman on the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers. He with other pioneers like Isaac Staples and Jacob Bean owned real estate in Stillwater, as well as several counties in Minnesota and Wisconsin in addition to Eastern property, making up a value of several millions.

General Hersey never actually left Bangor; his oldest son Roscoe represented his interests in the west. The 1880 Roscoe Hersey House in Stillwater is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
