June 16, 1917 – “Two young men employed by the Johnson-Wentworth company [in Cloquet, Minn.] were arrested on a charge of circulating a petition of a treasonable nature, protesting against the passage of a law for military service. Upon being closely questioned it was apparent they were ignorant of the seriousness of such actions and that they had no intention of any wrong-doing. Sheriff McKinnon took them to the county jail and after conferring with the United States authorities at Duluth, he gave the young men some timely and valuable advice and released them.”

June 15, 1910 – The old townsite of Ironton and the buildings contained thereon today became the property of the Riverside Land Company, of which J. L. Washburn and Marion Douglas are the chief stockholders.

The property comprises about 20 acres and although the price paid was not made public, it is estimated that the new owners paid $50,000 for the property.

Ironton lies just beyond West Duluth and east of Smithville.

It borders on the river and is considered a valuable manufacturing site.

Ironton is a western district of the city of Duluth, containing the great manufacturing plant of the United States Steel Corporation.1

Manufacturing plant of the United States Steel Corporation2

“In 1910, the US Steel Corporation selected the Duluth Works site as the location for a new steel manufacturing facility, which was fully constructed by 1916. The site was selected for its large size, proximity to the ore reserves, and location adjacent to Duluth’s inland port. The location allowed for low-cost shipping of steel products to national and international markets.”

June 14, 1910 – A whitefish weighing 36-1/2 pounds was caught off the northeast end of Isle Royale, Lake Superior, by Capt. John Maloney.

The fish was exhibited at the Booth Fisheries Company’s dock in Duluth today by C. W. Turner, manager of the company.

Six pounds makes a good sized whitefish and this great fish must have been a greybeard among his peers.

Tom Gruenwald with a whitefish pushing 10 pounds.
Imagine the size of one 36.5 lbs.

June 13, 1912 – Shattuck College, Faribault, Minn., was placed on the list of the ten distinguished military schools, according to a telegram received this evening by Dr. James Dobbin, director of the school.
