March 7, 1942 – “Tamara Faye LaValley (d. 2007) was born in International Falls, Minn., [on this date]. She later married fellow bible college student Jim Bakker. Together they established a Christian talk variety show, the PTL Club, which collapsed in 1987 amid a sex and money scandal.”

On This Date in Minnesota History: March 6

March 6, 2002 – In the episode “Dead Irish Writers” of the TV show The West Wing, which first aired on this date, character Donna Moss claims to be from Warroad, Minn.  In this episode, she becomes classified as a non-US citizen when the Canadian border is shifted south, moving Warroad into Canada.

On This Date in Minnesota History: March 5

March 5, 1853 - Scott County was established and organized by an Act passed in the legislature on this date. It was named for General Winfield Scott, “officer of the War of 1812, Commander of the United States Army during the Mexican War, an unsuccessful Whig candidate for the presidency in 1852. General Scott never visited the area, which was to be named for him, but in 1824 he was only a few miles away when he made an official inspection of Fort Snelling.”

March 2, 1920 – On this date, Frank O. Lowden returned to Sunrise, Minn., where he was born on Jan. 26, 1861, to announce his candidacy for President of the United States. Lowden was the Governor if Ill. at the time. “At the Republican Convention in Chicago, a deadlock occurred with General Leonard Wood. A compromise candidate was chosen and Warren G. Harding [became] the 29th President of the United States.”

This historical marker is located in front of the Sunrise, Minn. town hall where Frank Orren Lowden attended school.

Born January 26, 1861, just a mile southwest of here, Frank Lowden attended school at this site, until the age of 7. His Dad, Lorenzo, helped build the school at the beginning of the Civil War. His brother Eugene, and sister Caroline are buried in the Sunrise Cemetery. In 1868, the Lowdens moved to Iowa. From 1917-1921, Frank served as Governor of Illinois. On March 2, 1920, he returned to Sunrise and announced his candidacy for President! At the Republican Convention in Chicago, a deadlock occurred with General Leonard Wood. A compromise candidate was chosen and Warren G. Harding would become the 29th President of the United States.

March 1, 1927 – Clara Hampson Ueland, President of the Minnesota Woman Suffrage Association, 1914-19, and the first President of Minnesota League of Women Voters, 1919-20, died on this date. “Returning from the Capitol and a day of lobbying on behalf of a bill for working women, she was run down by a truck as she stepped off a street corner near her home.

A banner headline across the top of the front page of the next day's Minneapolis Journal on March 2, 1927, proclaimed: ‘Mrs. Andreas Ueland killed.’ A memorial service at the State Capitol was the first ever bestowed on a private citizen of Minnesota, as was the broadcast of that service over WCCO radio.”
