September 3, 2000 – Trina “Langenbrunner’s stabbed body was discovered off a rural road in southern St. Louis County, Minn.” Authorities said the 33-year-old mother of three “was hitchhiking to Grand Rapids to see her estranged husband the night of her death. On June 15, 2012, a convicted sex offender from Cloquet,
Joseph John Couture, was arrested for her 12-year-old murder, which was “considered one of the most high-profile cold cases in the Northland” according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s office.

On This Date in Minnesota History: August 31

August 31, 1912 – A severe wind, rain, hail and electrical storm passed over Winona, Minn., this evening, causing heavy damage and crippling of wire communications. Long-distance telephone communication is completely paralyzed and many of the lines in the city are out of communication.

Between Winona and Minnesota City, the storm appears to have been the most severe, 40 telephone poles are down and lying across the roadway. Farm buildings, fences and frail structures were destroyed. There has also been damage by lightning.

The Minneapolis Morning Tribune; “Storm Does Heavy Damage. Buildings Wrecked and Wires Are Torn Down in Southern Minnesota.”; Sept. 1, 1912; p. 1.

On This Date in Minnesota History: August 30

August 30, 1917 – “Frank Mattson today became a self-made hero when he was lowered down into a burning shaft of the Lincoln mine [in Virginia, Minn.] and without mask and single handed rescued two of his fellow miners, Oscar Pakkala and Joe Reinshe, who had been overcome by the smoke. Mattson found the victims near the flames and carried both of them to the surface. All three were revived by a pulmotor. Mattson's record will go down in the history of mining industry as the greatest hero of the Mesaba mine.

The fire broke out in the exits of Lincoln mine and had trapped 200 miners. All escaped but the two rescued by Mattson. The mine has now been successfully blocked and closed and as water cannot be obtained, the operators plan to smother the flames in the timber workings.”

On This Date in Minnesota History: August 29

August 29, 1910 - The Fitzgerald Theater, the oldest active theatre in Saint Paul, Minn., opened its doors on this evening as the Sam S. Shubert Theater with the play “The White Sister.”

Some unique innovations were offered to gain favor and publicity for the theater, including using “girls” as ushers instead of “boys,” an idea that had worked in theaters in the East, and making it easier for Minneapolis theater-goers by providing free automobile delivery of tickets, a cutting-edge idea never tried before in before in any city. All seats ordered by telephone were delivered, collect.

The building was purchased by Minnesota Public Radio in 1980 and restored with a stage in 1986 as a site for Prairie Home Companion, and was renamed in 1994 after St. Paul native F. Scott Fitzgerald.
