On This Date in Minnesota History: April 16

April 16, 2013 – The body of a stillborn child wrapped in dirty laundry was discovered on this date by workers at Crothall Laundry Services in Red Wing, Minn. Born April 4 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, the boy had been wrapped in a bedsheet in the hospital “morgue and mistaken for laundry that  was sent for cleaning.”  Chris Boese, Region’s chief nursing officer, apologized to the family and said the hospital was looking into what happened to ensure it didn’t happen again.

April 15, 1982 - Completed on Sept. 1, 1922 at a cost of $850,000, the current Stearns Courthouse, St. Cloud, Minn., was placed on the National Register of Historical Places on this date.

Stearns County Courthouse, St. Cloud, Minn.*

Some interesting facts about the courthouse are:

• The building originally had separate dormitories, washrooms and “shower
baths” for male  and female jurors.

• Rest rooms used to be designed so they were accessible on Sundays and
holidays, with an ornamental steel grille that stretched out to bar access
to the rest of the building.

• The building originally had a kitchenette equipped with a gas stove
designed so farmers’ wives could cook or warm food for themselves
and family members when they came to town on shopping trips.

• In 1992, Hollywood filmmakers used the ceremonial courtroom and
second floor rotunda to film scenes of “the Mighty Ducks,” starring
  Emilio Estevez.

April 12, 1921 – According to word received today by Daniel K. Gracie, father of Ralph D. Gracie, former Bemidji resident who was killed in action Aug. 12, 1918, the remains of the deceased will leave Jersey City tomorrow evening at 5:30 and will arrive in Bemidji on the Minnesota and International railway.

Ralph D. Gracie1

Gracie met his death serving his country in the aviation section of the U. S. Army during WWI. While engaged in an air battle, Gracie was overcome by an overwhelming number of German planes and it is believed that he was mortally wounded before his plane dropped into the sea. According to a note sent to the aviation officials the next day, the Germans recovered the body, and held a military burial and marked the grave with a cross bearing identification.

The American Legion Ralph Gracie Post 14 in Bemidji is named in his honor.

*April 11, 1953 – Approximately 1000 inmates from Stillwater Prison start fires, smash windows and shout profanities at the guards during a prolonged prison riot. It all started when prisoners refused to work in prison shops earlier in the week and staged a sit-down. One of their complaints was that the prison cook, Louis Gillis, “had put raisins in gravy served the men. They went back to work when Gilles was fired.”
