On This Date in Minnesota History: June 15

June 15, 1899 – General R. A. Alger, Secretary of War, arrived in Duluth with his party this morning. They immediately went out for a trip on the bay, visiting the sawmill of Alger, Smith & Co. In the afternoon they left on the Duluth and Iron Range road for Knife River, where General Alger visited his extensive pine timber holdings and inspected the logging road owned by his company. In two days there will be a large reception in Duluth with a parade. Ten companies of militia, including seven from outside of Duluth, and all the local civil bodies, will form a parade.

June 13, 1968 - An F5 tornado struck Tracy, Minn., on this date. “The tornado killed nine people and injured 150 others as it tracked 9 miles (14 km) through Murray, Lyon and Redwood counties in southwestern Minn. It is one of only two official F5 tornadoes that have occurred in Minn., although several other tornadoes that occurred before 1950 are estimated to have been F5 strength. The tornado destroyed 111 homes, caused major damage to 76, and minor damage to 114. Five businesses were destroyed and 15 damaged. The elementary school and 106 automobiles were also destroyed. A heavy boxcar was heaved more than a block in the storm. Winds were estimated at 261 to 318 mph. Hard rains and hail were also reported.”

This image by Eric was awarded third place in the 1968 National Newspaper Association contest for best news photo.

June 12, 1873 - On this date, “farmers in southwestern Minnesota saw what looked like a snowstorm coming towards their fields from the west. Then they heard a roar of beating wings and saw that what seemed to be snowflakes were in fact grasshoppers. In a matter of hours, knee-high fields of grass and wheat were eaten to the ground by hungry hoppers. The grasshoppers' dramatic descent was just the beginning. For five years, from 1873 to 1877, grasshoppers destroyed wheat, oat, corn, and barley fields in Minnesota and surrounding states. In 1876 alone, grasshoppers visited forty Minnesota counties and destroyed 500,000 acres of crops.”

June 10, 1912 – Nicola Lielich, a survivor of the Titanic disaster, recently employed in the mines of the Virginia district, left Duluth today on his way to New York, for the purpose of bringing an action for damages against the White Star Steamship Company. He claims to have lost $400 in money besides his baggage when the ship went down. His complaint alleges that his health was permanently injured by exposure in the water, so that he is no longer able to work, as he used to, in the mines. Under the marine laws it is doubtful if he can even recover for his personal belongings, but he intends to try.

Titanic1

Lielich was picked up by one of the life-boats, as he was swimming around in the icy water. He held a two-year-old boy, whom he had found floating on the water, and that was why he was taken upon the boat. When Lielich was picked up, it was found that the lower part of his trousers had to be cut away.

After returning to the Range country, Lielich attempted to work again at mining, but he found this impossible, he says, on account of cramps. For a long time he was able to earn some money by lecturing on the Titanic wreck in moving picture houses.

On arriving at New York he was cared for in one of the hospitals of that city. As his money and baggage were lost, the sisters (nuns) presented him with $25. He left the child whom he had rescued in their care.
