On This Date in Minnesota History: February 11

February 11, 1914 – Minnesota has the lowest death rate of any state that keeps an accurate registration of death statistics, according to an announcement made by the census bureau in Washington today. The death rate here is 10.7 per 1,000, based on the estimated population. Maryland shows the highest death rate, with 16.3 per 1,000. Wisconsin is Minnesota’s closest competitor, with 10.9.

Of the 45 cities that register statistics, Minneapolis and St. Paul show a death rate of 13 per 1,000. Only two other cities in the U. S. , Portland, Ore. and Oakland, Cal., show a better record that the Twin Cities. Portland has 11 per 1,000 and Oakland 12.3. Memphis has the highest death rate with 22.9.

The Minneapolis Morning Tribune; “Minnesota Healthiest State in the Union. Death Rate 10.7 Per 1,000 Population, Census bureau Figures Show. Wisconsin Nearest Competitor, With 10.9 Deaths Per 1,000. Only Two Towns in Country Have Lower Mortality Rate Than Twin Cities.”; Feb. 12, 1914; p. 7.

February 9, 1881 - Ada, the Norman County seat, was founded in 1874, and incorporated as a village on this date. It was named in honor of a daughter of William H. Fisher, of St. Paul, then attorney and superintendent of the St. Paul and Pacific railroad, under whose superintendencey this line of the Red river valley was constructed. Ada Nelson Fisher died at the age of six years, in 1880, but this prosperous and beautiful village and the county perpetuate her name and memory.

February 8, 1887 – “Congress passed the Dawes Act, named for its author, Senator Henry Dawes of Massachusetts. Also known as the General Allotment Act, the law allowed for the president to break up reservation land, which was held in common by the members of a tribe, into small allotments to be parceled out to individuals.”1

The stated objective of the Dawes Act was to stimulate assimilation of Indians into American society. Individual ownership of land was seen as an essential step. The act also provided that the government would purchase Indian land ‘excess’ to that needed for allotment and open it up for settlement by non-Indians.”2

February 7, 1867 - Laura Ingalls Wilder, the author of the beloved semi-autobiographical Little House series, was born near Pepin, Wis., on this date, the second daughter of Charles and Caroline Ingalls.

Her book On the Banks of Plum Creek recalls the Ingalls family move from Kansas to an area near Walnut Grove, Minn., and settling in a dugout "on the banks of Plum Creek". They lived there beginning in 1874, when Wilder was about seven years old. That year the family again moved, this time to Lake City, Minn., and then on to a preemption claim in Walnut Grove, where they lived for a time with relatives near South Troy, Minn.

On This Date in Minnesota History: February 5

February 5, 1917 – An outbreak of typhoid fever in which the source of infection was traced to the drinking of raw Mississippi River water by laborers in the camp of the P.M. Hennessey Construction Co. on the Farmers’ Terminal Packing plant near St. Paul was reported today by Dr. W. P. Greene, investigator for the state board of health.

Well water service at the camp was discontinued because of the expense of 50 cents a day, the report said, and the camp cook was ordered to get water from the river. The St. Paul Health Dept. recently reported a positive case of typhoid and added that 15 or 20 men among 70 boarders in the camp showed symptoms of the disease. Five are now in the city and county hospital in St. Paul and other victims of the infection are sick at their homes near the camps. Twin City health departments were requested today to watch for additional cases.

The Minneapolis Morning Tribune; “Laborers Ill After Drinking River Water. Many Employes (sic) in Packing Plant Near St. Paul Infected with Typhoid.”; Feb. 6, 1917; p. 1.
