On This Date in Minnesota History: April 12

April 12, 1911 - The funeral  this afternoon of Edward Oestreich, the fireman of No. 3 firehall, who died April 8 after an operation at St. Mary’s Hospital, was one of the largest ever seen in Duluth. Hundreds of people turned out to pay their last respects to the memory of the late engineer of the department. Born and raised in Duluth, he had been connected with the department the last 12 years, and was most popular, not only with his fellow members, but with all who knew him.

The services took place from the English Lutheran Church. The church was crowded to the doors, and many who wished to gain admittance had to be turned away. The casket was born to the Forest Hill Cemetery in one of the horse wagons, which had been draped for the occasion. Over it was spread a large flag , and over this were heaped many flowers. The body was followed to the cemetery by a large squad of firemen and a platoon of police.

*April 11, 1965 - Dennis Craig Jurgens (December 6, 1961 – April 11, 1965) was the most famous and only fatal victim of prolific child abuser Lois Jurgens of White Bear Lake, Minn., who abused a total of six adopted children during a period spanning the 1950s to 1970s. The eventual trial of Lois Jurgens for his murder [on this date] made national headlines and was the top news story for the state of Minnesota in 1987, and is one of few crimes that FBI agent Kenneth Lanning argues can legitimately be described as "ritual abuse".

On This Date in Minnesota History: April 8

April 8, 1914 – Martin Flanagan, former chief, and Fred Turner, former detective of the St. Paul police force, are inmates of the state penitentiary at Stillwater. The two men, who were recently convicted of receiving bribes from disorderly women (brothel owners), were received at the prison at 10 a.m. today.

Now known as No. 4496 and No. 4497, both men were assigned cells without delay.

Matt Flanagan1

Flanagan and Turner left the Ramsey County Jail at 8:50 this morning in a closed automobile. With them were two deputy sheriffs and each carried a small grip containing personal comforts. Such things are permitted at the prison and the deputies brought the grips.

Flanagan was in good spirits, but Turner was depressed. Flanagan before entering automobile bade a cheery goodbye to onlookers. Turner shook hands all around.

Flanagan’s last visitors at the county jail were his wife and daughter. Turner saw his family Tuesday and none of them was on hand to bid him goodbye this morning.

At the prison doors John T. Whalen, assistant deputy warden, met the two men and gave a receipt to the deputies acknowledging their arrival at the prison. Whalen formerly lived in White Bear Lake, which was Turner’s home, and greeted Turner saying, “I am sorry to see you here, Fred.”

“So am I,” answered the detective.

Both men were photographed and the usual measurements taken. Each was given a clean shave and haircut. Warden Wolf will decide what the men would do while incarcerated. It will be Good Friday before the men have an opportunity to speak with each other again. Convicts have their only opportunity to converse together on holidays.

The Minneapolis Morning Tribune; “Flanagan and Turner Are in Penitentiary; Former St. Paul Officials Taken to Stillwater in Closed Auto. Unusual Formalities of Receiving Prisoners Are Gone Through With. Flanagan in Good Spirits, but Turner Still Is Depressed.”; April 9, 1914; p. 9.

April 7, 1914 – A posse headed by Sheriff John Meining of Duluth is protecting the Bangor Mine on the Mesabi Range, the property of the Pickands Mather Company, as a result of a walkout of 100 men on Saturday, April 4.

The miners, it is said, became dissatisfied when the company changed from the account system to the contract system, under which the men are paid according to the amount of work they do. No acts of violence have been reported.
