On This Date in Minnesota History: April 5

*April 5, 1920 - John Smith of Cass Lake, the noted Chippewa whose age is given as 135 years or more and well known as a friend of the whites in the days of the Sioux outbreaks, came to Deer River from Bena today and met old friends with whom he still likes to joke. Capt. John Smith is stooped and his eyes are fast failing, and he has had to be led about the streets.

On This Date in Minnesota History: April 4

April 4, 1917 – E. B. Hawkins, former Republican National Committeeman of Minnesota, has offered his yacht to the United Stated government as a submarine chaser.

Hawkins arrived in Washington, D. C., today on his way from his winter home in Florida, navigating the boat through the Inland Passage. He made inquiries in Washington as to the place where his boat should be delivered. He was directed to submit it to the commandant of the navy yard at Brooklyn and left this afternoon for that point.

Hawkins says he does not know whether his yacht will fill the bill because it is not especially fast, but if the government inspectors can make any use of it, it will be at their service.

“I don’t want to sell the boat,” Hawkins said, “but if the government can make any use of it, it is theirs. I hope it will be possible to make use of it and that it will be an addition to the government’s fleet of submarine chasers.”

The boat originally cost $40,000, and has received expensive improvements since it was built.

The Minneapolis Morning Tribune; “Yacht Is Offered by Duluth Man for War; Owner suggests It for U-Boat Chaser—Craft Cost $40,000.”; April 5, 1917; p. 1.

April 3, 1970“The former Greyhound bus station in Minneapolis opened its doors as a music club, the Depot on this date. Eight years later it would be renamed First Avenue by Steve McClellan and Jack Meyers. A cornerstone of the city's music scene, First Avenue hosted local and national acts and was featured in Prince's movie Purple Rain.”

On This Date in Minnesota History: April 2

April 2, 1916 – The Mississippi River is higher than it has been in 15 years, farmers near Coon Rapids dam, 11 miles above Minneapolis, said today.

Fifteen more men were added to the crews of watchers at Coon Rapids dam today, it was announced at the office of F. W. Laird, superintendent of the power house there. Constant watch has to be kept at the gate.

Three and one-half feet of water are passing over 20 gates at Coon Rapids. A big jam of ice and logs a mile above the dam increases the danger, for large sections in breaking away today let walls of water from three to six feet above the ordinary flood waters down on the dam. No fear for the safety of the Coon Rapids dam is felt if the whole ice jam does not let loose at once, it was stated.

The Crow River carried out part of the bridge at Dayton, Minn., near the Coon Rapids dam late Saturday. The first floors of eight houses at Dayton were flooded to a depth of one to two feet.

Work on the coffer dam at the government dam near the Soldiers’ Home was suspended today, a portion of the trestle work being carried away. No fear for the safety of the dam was felt, though flood waters, it was said, if the rise continues, might cause a repetition of last year’s disaster, when several concrete and steel piers, weighing 40 to 50 tons each, were swept away.

On This Date in Minnesota History: April 1

April 1, 1904 – Mrs. Annie Colton, who, it is alleged, killed her husband at Bloomington, Ill., on May 24, 1897, in a fit of jealous rage, came through St. Paul today in charge of Detective Kennedy of that city.

Since the time of the murder she has been traced through the country from city to city and was caught at Butte last Tuesday. In Butte she had married a wealthy butcher and thought she was secure from capture. She is said to have split her husband’s head open with an ax and fired two bullets into the body.

The Saint Paul Globe; “Mrs. Annie Colton Passes Through City; Woman Accused of Murdering Her Husband Is Under Arrest.”; April 2, 1904; p. 2.
