“City Hall and Courthouse A familiar view of the City Hall and Courthouse from the northwest. As seen in the photograph, the magnificent structure dwarfed surrounding buildings, such as the row houses to the west and across the block. It remained the tallest building in Minneapolis until the construction of the Foshay Tower in the 1920s.”

January 9, 2014 – Imprisoned for nine months in the United Arab Emirates over a YouTube video spoof of Dubai youth culture, Shezanne Cassim landed at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport today a free man. Born in Sri-Lanca, Cassim is a U.S. citizen from Woodbury who had been living and working in Dubai. After posting the video, he was brought in for questioning by the police and immediately jailed. Two months later, he was locked in the Abu Dhabi prison, as were several of his friends who appeared in the video.

Cassim’s family had contacted U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who worked closely with the State Department, “met with the U.S. Ambassador to the U.A.E. and worked directly with the Emirates Ambassador to the United States to advocate for Cassim’s return. Sen. Al Frankin, D-Minn., and U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., also joined the push.”

On This Date in Minnesota History: January 7

January 7, 1911 – The first appearance in district court of Duluth’s woman lawyer, Mrs. I. C. Buell, took place this morning when she appeared before Judge William A. Cant to argue against a motion transferring the case of Duchon Vuckovich against the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company to the Virginia court.

Mrs. I. C. Buell, Attorney at Law

The motion for the transfer was made by Attorney Theodore Hollister, who represents the mining company. Judge Cant denied the motion.

Mrs. Buell represents Duchon Vuckovich in his personal injury case against the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company. He was hurt, he claims, while working for the company, and asks for $2,000.

Mrs. Buell is making quite a reputation as a settlement lawyer. Since coming to Duluth she has never before appeared in court either to argue a motion or to try a case. Some attorneys think it best to talk the matter over and settle it out of court.

On This Date in Minnesota History: January 6

January 6, 1920 – Unrepentant for the scores of highway robberies in the Twin Cities, and mindful only of his “reputation,” Henry Jorgenson, alias Robert Alden, the Owatonna kid, today pleaded with a St. Paul Dispatch reporter to “get it right with the public about that pint of cream which you said I stole.”

Jorgenson, who is only 18 years old, has admitted to 20 holdups in St. Paul and 14 in Minneapolis in the past three months, according to police. He and his partner, George Christensen, also under arrest, have admitted their identity as the Mutt and Jeff bandits whose activities in the Hill district have kept police on edge since Nov.

Jorgensen was arrested in Minneapolis on Sunday by Detective William Oliver and Thomas Brown of St. Paul after he had purchased a ticket to Owatonna, his home.

Police recalled today that it was Owatonna that charged that St. Paul was the harbor of thieves and accused the police department of protecting bandits who operated in nearby towns. In his confession, Jorgensen said that Owatonna was his “nest” where he ran to cover after he had prayed on the public.

Police Chief J. J. O’Connor, who outguessed Jorgensen and led him into a trap, has characterized him as “an ace of the underworld and the coolest working ‘stick-up’ in St. Paul in a decade.”

Jorgensen is a debonair, well dressed youth with an easy, courteous manner and is an excellent conversationalist.

The Daily People’s Press; “Bandit Youth Says Home is in Owatonna. Admits more than 20 Robberies in Twin Cities.”; Owatonna, Minn.; Jan. 7, 1920; p. 1.
