On this date in Minnesota History: June 20

June 20, 1916 – North Dakota is suing the state of Minnesota in the U.S. Supreme Court for $1,500.00 damages alleged done to North Dakota farm lands by the overflow of the Mustinka state ditch near Charlesville, Traverse County, which the Minnesota legislature ordered constructed in 1911.

*

It is an action in equity and was filed by the attorney general of North Dakota. He asks that the ditch be permanently abandoned.

The papers allege that 12,000 acres of fertile land, comprising 80 farms, has been rendered valueless. It is alleged that the lands were never overflowed until 1911. The losses are reported to be over $100,000 annually.

On account of it being an action between states, the lawsuit was filed in the U.S. Supreme Court.

June 18, 1922 – Mrs. Josephine Koon, widow of Judge Martin Koon, and Miss Lucy Gilbert, for 25 years head of the art department of the Minneapolis public library, lost their lives when the Lafayette Club at Lake Minnetonka burned to the ground today.

Photo of Lafayette Club that burned in 19221

The country club was one of the most-fashionable, and the damage is estimated at approximately $150,000. Loss to guests, including diamonds, was estimated at between $35,000 and $50,000. The loss is fully covered by insurance. Between 40 and 50 guests escaped in their night apparel.

The Lafayette Club replaced the Lafayette Hotel that burned down in 1897. It began operation in 1906, when the streetcar boats began operating on Lake Minnetonka. One of their regular stops was the Lafayette landing in Minnetonka Beach. Here they met Great Northern passenger trains coming from both the east and west along the line.

June 16, 1907 – Four hundred people were stranded on the southern landing of the Duluth aerial bridge because the bridge was put out of commission by a bolt of lightning about 10 p.m. during a short electrical and wind storm that came up suddenly from the west. Mayor Cullum put in a request for tug boats to collect those marooned on Park Point and bring them back to the Duluth side of the canal, but none responded. The Union Tug company said it was because the company did not have passenger licenses, and didn’t want to break the law.

When the lightning struck the bridge, there were close to a half a dozen people on it. No one was injured, although two or three women were so badly frightened that they fainted, but were quickly revived. No damage was done to the bridge.

The bridge was put back in operation at 1:30 a.m. and took the crowd across to the city.

The Duluth Aerial bridge “began life as an extremely rare transporter bridge—the first of just two such bridges ever constructed in the United States. Originally built in 1905, the bridge was upgraded in 1929–30 to the current lifting design and continues to operate today. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places” on June 6, 1973.

June 15, 1920 – “Three African American circus workers were accused of assaulting a White woman in Duluth. Many men were jailed and three were dragged from the jail by a mob of Duluthians and lynched from a light pole as a crowd of perhaps 10,000 watched. The victims were Elias Clayton (1901-1920), Elmer Jackson (1901-1920), and Isaac McGhie (1900-1920). A chapter of the NAACP was formed in Duluth almost immediately after the murders.”
