March 24, 1908 – The Clearwater Lake dam at Neving, Clearwater County, was blown out this evening by some miscreant who had some imaginary grudge against the owner of the dam. This dam was built with proper fishways, and has been but little used the past three seasons, excepting for the power required to run the waterworks for the Neving buildings and irrigation ditches. It was one of the old landmarks, having first been constructed in 1879 and rebuilt in 1894.

Certain parties expected to build a flour mill and sawmill at the dam the coming season, which would have been a great convenience for the settlers in that section of the country. How the blowing out of the dam will affect the project is impossible to say at the present time.

Later—The mail carrier who just came in to Bagley from the Neving post-office reports that the explosion that blew out the dam caused such a severe shock that all the windows in Robert Neving’s home, barn and outbuildings were broken and considerable other damage occurred around Mr. Neving’s place.

The mail carrier states that suspicion rests upon one of Mr. Neving’s neighbors as having been the party who blew out the dam and that an investigation to locate the dam-blower.

It is reported that the S. P. K. Lumber, Cedar & Tie Company sustained considerable loss through the explosion by the flood of water that was let out and that carried away a large quantity of logs belonging to the company, which were banked on the river below the dam.

J. C. Parker of Bemidji, superintendent for the S. P. K. Lumber, Cedar & Tie Company, is on the ground where the dam was blown out and is looking after the interests of his company.  The work of repairing the dam so that the flood of water may be temporarily stopped and the stringing of booms to catch the logs was rushed all Wednesday afternoon and last night and it is hoped that the water will be stopped by tomorrow.1

Neving, a post-office near the mouth of Clearwater Lake, in Sinclair township, was named for  lumberman and farmer Robert Neving, who removed to Saskatchewan about the year 1910.2

March 23, 1965 – Audrey Ann Samuelson was found innocent of the charge of murdering her husband, Bayport dentist Dr. Philip Samuelson, by a Washington County jury. Mrs. Samuelson said she had shot her husband in self-defense as he came at her in a rage on Nov. 14, 1964. She and her three children had testified that her husband had been physically abusing them for many years. The State had claimed Mrs. Samuelson had deliberately shot her husband because she thought he was leaving her for another woman.

March 22, 1922 – Three cracksmen engaged early today in a battle with Minneapolis detectives at the Standard Oil headquarters. The trio held up watchman King, bound him and drew in into a room. They succeeded in opening a vault, but inside found two safes. After opening one, which contained only papers, they started to work on the second safe, which contained $10,000.

Meanwhile King was able to free one hand, wiggle over to a desk, secure a paper knife and cut his bonds. He called to the street summoning police, who arrived before the robbers opened the other safe. After an exchange of shots, the robbers escaped.
