On This Date in Minnesota History: June 4

June 4, 1920 – Appearing in Minneapolis this evening as a platform proxy for her father, Frank O. Lowden, presidential candidate and current governor of Ill., Florence Lowden insisted on discussing not the political possibilities of her distinguished father, but the prosaic topic of the Holstein cow. She spoke before 300 members of the Holstein-Friesan Association at a dinner given at the farm of John B. Irwin in Richfield.

Florence Lowden1

The coming of the governors daughter was due to two causes, first because the chief executive of Ill. found it impossible to leave Chicago, and second, because she herself is an authority on the bovine subject.

Frank O. Lowden2

Miss Lowden, it became known, had learned all about the Holstein cow on Sinnissippi farm near Oregon, Ill., owned by her father. There the family owns one of the most valuable herds of Holsteins in the world.

Miss Lowden was accompanied on her trip here by Mrs. F. M. Scott of Chicago. She stayed at the Radisson Hotel and will return to Chicago tomorrow night. She is one of four children of the governor.

On This Date in Minnesota History: June 3

June 3, 1902 – Vessel interests in Duluth, Minn., say they will petition for a fog signal station and other protection at Knife Island, 20 miles [up] the North Shore from Duluth. Every year, vessels go aground there, suffering great loss. So far this year, there have been four vessels stranded at that place.

The last of these was the $300,000 steel ship Mataafa, which got off today, only to find that 35-steel plates on her hull were smashed by contact with the rocks. The Mataafa had also been grounded on Knife Island due to fog on June 2, 1901.

The SS Mataafa1

The great danger lies from the magnetic attraction that draws the needle. In foggy weather, this is quite likely to land a ship on the point east of Knife Island, which is a mass of bare rocks.

On This Date in Minnesota History: May 29

May 29, 1911 – One of the weirdest stunts ever pulled off by a baseball fan in this area came to light tonight at Nicollet Park. When the watchman made his rounds late in the evening, he discovered two men wrapped up in blankets, sleeping in the grandstand. The men explained that they were from Eden Valley and that last year they came in for the Memorial Day game and could not get a seat. They told the Tribune reporter who went out to interview them, that they were determined to get good seats this time. They refused to give their names but said that they would be on the job, rooting for the Millers tomorrow afternoon.
