Plaque:

Prairie chickens moved ahead of the settlers to inhabit the prairies of Minnesota. A large concentration of the protected bird can still be seen on prairie meadows of
the Rothsay area. In the early spring the male prairie chicken performs his mating
ritual called booming. He spreads his wings and tail feathers, inflates the orange
wind sacs and struts while making the booming sound.

On June 10, 1975, Rothsay was designated “Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota”. This statue of a booming prairie chicken was designed and built by Art Fosse with assistance and funds from the community. The statue stands 13 x 18 feet and weighs 9,000 pounds. It was placed on this site and unveiled,
June 15, 1976.

The objective of this project is to alert area visitors and remind local residents of the beauty to be found on the native prairie grasslands.

On This Date in Minnesota History: June 9

June 9, 1917 – Mike Moore, the first to be tried of the five men indicted for the murder of Alice McQuillan Dunn on April 26, was found guilty this afternoon. The jury was out 45 minutes, reaching their verdict on the first ballot (they spent the rest of the time talking about the case). Judge Hanft then imposed a life sentence in state prison.

Chief Characters in the Dunn Murder Case*

Throughout his trial, Moore, accused of being the go-between for Frank Dunn, estranged husband of the victim, and Joe Redenaugh and Frank McCool, the two men involved in the shooting of Mrs. Dunn, put on a crazy act, claiming he was Jesse James and requesting an all-female jury, which was not legal in Minnesota at the time.

When his sentence was announced, Moore screamed, shouted and cursed the jury, Judge Hanft and crowds of spectators. Using vile and obscene language, he stormed and raged until detectives and deputy sheriffs struggling with him, finally overpowered and handcuffed him.

Locked to Deputy Sheriff Court Herbert, Moore was rushed out of the courtroom and to a waiting car, which hurried him to jail.

On This Date in Minnesota History: June 8

June 8, 1920 – Nearly 200 high school-aged girls fled in their nigh clothes from Lutheran Ladies Seminary in Red Wing, Minn., at 2 a.m. after a fire broke out in the washroom on the third floor, spreading rapidly and destroying the entire structure.

The buildings were located on a hill and low water pressure handicapped the firemen so that they were unable to save anything. All the girls lost their belongings and narrowly escaped with their lives.

The loss to the building is estimated at more than a quarter million dollars. Today was commencement day at the institution and scores of parents from all parts of the country were there. Most of the girls lost their commencement outfits, turning a joyous day into one of tragedy.

The Bemidji Daily Pioneer; “Lutheran Seminary Destroyed at Red Wing. Fire Breaks Out at 2 A. M. Today and Makes a Clean Sweep. Loss Estimated Nearly At Quarter Million. Two Hundred Girls of High School Age Fled in Night Clothing.”; June 08, 1920; p. 1.
