On This Date in Minnesota History: July 20

July 20, 1940 – With temperatures in the low 90s for most of the day, opening day for the first Minneapolis Aquatennial celebration was hot and crowded. Approximately 200,000 spectators watched the Aquatennial Parade’s five-mile march down the parade route. The streets were lined two hours before the 4:30 p.m. start time.

“In the line of march were a national record number of 86 floats, in addition to 50 bands and drum and bugle corps and scores of uniformed marching units.”

In other events, 5,500 spectators listened to western movie star and radio performer Gene Autry sing and watched rodeo stars perform bulldogging, bronco-riding and other hazardous tricks.

July 19, 1889 - Albert Bulow was hanged at gallows constructed near the Morrison County Courthouse on this date, thus being the only person in Morrison County to have been legally executed.1

Caught in Verndale with Frank Eich’s horses and wagon, Burow confessed to shooting Eich of Buckman, Minn., in the neck on Nov. 24, 1888.1 Charles A. Lindbergh, Sr. offered his legal services, but Burrow declined.2 During his March 1889 trial, Bulow pled guilty and was sentenced by Judge D. B. Searle to be hanged.1

July 17, 1990 – Playing against the Boston Red Sox on [this date], the Minnesota Twins became the first (and to date the only) team in baseball history to turn two triple plays in the same game. Both triple plays were 5-4-3 plays (Gary Gaetti – Al Newman – Kent Hrbek).  Jody Reed was the first out in the fourth inning play and the final out (batting) in the eighth inning play. Despite their defensive heroics, the Twins lost the game 1–0.”
