On This Date in Minnesota History: April 23

April 23, 1911 – Twelve boys escaped this evening from the Red Wing state training school. They made their getaway through a basement window in the main building. Up to midnight only one of the boys had been captured. The escaped boys ranged in age from 16 to 18 years. They were first missed about 10 p.m.

Twenty officers, the school’s entire force, and the Red Wing police force, conducted a vigilant search.

The escaped boys were known as leaders among the inmates and have all been on the verge of open revolt since a recent legislative investigation. They had become almost unmanageable and their escape was not entirely unexpected by the training school officials.

It is thought the boys are hiding in the hills surrounding the institution and that with the return of daylight, they will all be apprehended.

The Minneapolis Morning Tribune; “Red Wing Boys Escape. Twelve Inmates of State Training School Run Away—One Captured.”; April 24, 1911; p. 1.
