June 22, 1922 – Burglars blew open the safe at the Milwaukee depot in Albert Lea and got away with $65 and several tickets and other valuables kept in the safe. Laundry soap used to fill the cracks of the doors before the blast, spattered the ceiling, walls and floor of the depot and the floor was littered with tickets and other papers.

June 19, 1922 – Mrs. Anna Dickie Olesen was nominated for the United States Senate on the Democratic ticket on this date’s statewide primary in Minn. It was the first time in the history of the state—local politicians say it is the first time in the history of the country—that a woman had sought the Senatorial nomination of a major political party, and in Mrs. Olesen’s case, she had the endorsement of the Democratic convention.

New York Times; “WOMAN NOMINATED FOR U.S. SENATOR; Mrs. Olesen, Named by Minnesota Democrats, Is All for ‘Common People.’ SAYS SHE'S EAGER TO SERVE. Wife of a School Superintendent, She Campaigned the State in a Little Sedan.”; June 20, 1922.

June 17, 1919 – The remains of Ralph Gracie, the first Bemidji boy killed in action in WWI, have been found. Shot down in his airplane on Aug. 12, 1918, while in an air battle with the enemy, two miles from Ostend, Belgium, Major Zenn of France has successfully located his gravesite.

Ralph Gracie1

Major Zenn searched the records of Berlin and found his grave to be No. 1776; cemetery No. 2. The record also shows that he was buried by the Germans on Aug. 13, the day after he was killed.

“His remains were brought home to Bemidji and buried in a family plot in Greenwood Cemetery.”2

On June 6 of that year, the Bemidji Sentinel reported that 40 some veterans had met to organize the local American Legion and proposed that the newly formed post be named to honor Ralph Gracie, the first Bemidji man killed in action in WWI. The charter became official in August 1920.”2
