October 25, 2007 – Michael John Anderson, age 19, murdered Katherine Anne Olson, a 24-year-old theater and Hispanic studies graduate of St. Olaf College and temporary nanny, [in Savage] after seeing an ad for her services as a nanny on Craigslist.

“The prosecution charged that Anderson created and posted a fake advertisement on Craigslist ‘in order to lure a woman to his home so he might experience what it felt like to kill.’

“Posing as a married woman named ‘Amy’ who was looking for nanny services, Anderson exchanged emails with Olson. When she arrived at his parents' house for an interview, he shot her in the back with a .357 Magnum and put her body into the trunk of her car. He then drove to a Burnsville Nature Preserve, where he abandoned it.

“The car with Olson's body in it was discovered on October 26, 2007.”

October 24, 1922 – Andrew Olson, aged about 37, single, was killed while at work as a shovel cranesman at the Hawkins mine near Nashwauk today. Olson was craning on a shovel in the northwestern end of the pit when the accident happened. The bank at this point consisted of clay and before any of the workman realized the danger, the bank of dirt caved in upon the shovel, striking Olson who was sitting at his station on the boom.

The shovel engineer swung the boom to the opposite side of the bank as soon as e noticed the dirt falling but was unable to speed the boom to safety in saving the cranesman’s life. Olson died within an hour after being taken to the hospital.

October 23, 1933 – Gangster Baby Face Nelson and four of his cohorts gained entry to the First National Bank in Brainerd at gunpoint just before 6 a.m. on this date when a worker came to check on the basement furnace. Armed with at least two machine guns and .45-caliber automatics, Nelson and friends corralled the bank employees one by one as they came into work and stretched them out on the front office floor. “When the tellers arrived, each was taken in turn to open their separate vaults.”

First National Bank in Brainerd1

“With the money collected and the time approaching 9 a.m., Baby Face Nelson and his gang left the employees in a rear bathroom. The robbers sprayed the lobby with machine gun fire as they exited” to ensure no one would follow.  “The gunmen had been staying at [Sebago Resort] on the north side of Round Lake and were familiar with the first names of bank employees, work schedules and escape routes.

In the end, the bank robbers stole $32,000 from the bank. The loss was covered by insurance.”

October 22, 1904 – A shrapnel shell exploded in the hands of Ed Klossner of New Ulm. Both were so lacerated and mangled that amputation was necessary.

His brother was instantly killed.

The young men had been out where the artillery were doing target practice and had found an unexploded shell that they took home with the intention of opening it. They were cautioned against it and advised to throw the shell in the river.

This afternoon they attempted to remove the cap. The younger boy stood 20 feet away watching his older brother who held the shell in one hand and a wrench in the other.

The explosion sent portions of the shell through his side, cut a large gash in his leg above the knee and instantly killed his brother.

Ed Klossner was taken to the hospital where his wounds were dressed. He is 25 years old and his brother was 20.

October 21, 1904 – Believed to be dead, John Haven, a lineman for the Northwestern Telephone Company, was taken to an undertaking establishment after falling 35 feet from a pole on Cedar Ave. and Fourth St. this afternoon.  Much to everyone’s surprise, he is still alive and will be back at work next week.

Haven was at work on a pole when he lost his hold and fell. He struck his head and shoulders and lay stunned. Bystanders, thinking him dead, took him to Enger Bros. undertaking establishment.

A physician found Haven very much alive, his injuries consisting of only a scalp wound and a few painful bruises. After an hour he regained consciousness.

The Minneapolis Journal; “Undertaker Lost Job. Lineman, Stunned by Fall, Revives to Find Himself in Undertaker’s Shop.”; Oct. 22, 1904.
