On This Date in Minnesota History: April 27

April 27, 1904 – The state railroad and warehouse commission today ordered the Northern Pacific to sell passenger tickets to Aitkin via Carlton at the same rate as via Staples or Brainerd. The order will become effective immediately.

About three months ago the Commercial Club of Aitkin petitioned the commission to compel the Northern Pacific to grant it the same rate via Carlton as by way of Staples. The members of the club who appeared before the commission said that under the present schedule the train service was inadequate.

It was pointed out that if one wished to leave the Twin Cities for Aitkin at night, he was obliged to wait at Staples from midnight until 3 a .m. to make connections.

The new arrangement will give the people of Aitkin a service that will allow them to leave St. Paul at 2 p. m. and arrive at their home at 10 p. m. the same evening.

The Saint Paul Globe; “N. P. Must Sell Tickets to Aitkin Via Carlton; Railroad Commission Grants Petition of Commercial Club.”; April 28, 1904; p. 6.

April 26, 1899 - John Beargrease and his brothers delivered the mail between Two Harbors and Grand Marais, Minn., for almost twenty years using a variety of methods, including canoes, horses and large boats. Beargrease was best known for his winter travels by dogsled. His sled looked more like a toboggan than today’s sleds and he ran with teams of only four dogs. His fastest trip on dogsled was 28 hours from Two Harbors to Grand Marais.

The mail trip was made once a week…an incredible feat for one man to accomplish especially when you consider the constant range of altitude along the shore. Eventually, the Lake Shore Trail that Beargrease traveled for twenty years became an actual road, one that could be traveled with horse and buggy. His last mail trip to Grand Marais was on this date.

April 24, 1926 – Herbert W. Sellner of Faribault, Minn., filed patent # 1745719 for what would become the Tilt-a-Whirl, an amusement park ride still popular today. The patent was issued February 4, 1930.1

Over the next year, Sellner, a woodworker and maker of water slides, built the first 14 Tilt-A-Whirls in his basement and yard. In 1927, Sellner Manufacturing opened its factory in Faribault, and the ride debuted that year at the Minnesota State Fair.2

April 22, 1920 – Dr. Maria Sanford, professor emeritus of the University of Minnesota and the best known woman in Minnesota, was found dead in her bed at the home of Senator Knute Nelson this morning. She was 83 years old.

Professor Marie Sanford1

Miss Sanford, who came to Washington, D. C. to attend the continental congress of the Daughters of the American Revolution was apparently in good health when she retired last night. When members of Senator Nelson’s household went to her bedroom to summon her for breakfast, she was found to be dead.

Physicians were called. They said her death was due to heart disease, probably caused by overexertion.

Despite her 83 years, Miss Sanford was unusually active and took a prominent part in the D.A.R. convention. At the opening of the session she delivered an apostrophe on the American flag. It was regarded as a patriotic masterpiece, and Miss Sanford had made arrangements to go to New York City to have the speech recorded on phonograph records, which were to be used in spreading patriotism in the United States.

Miss Sanford was one of the leading women educators in the country. She was born at Old Saybrook, Conn., 83 years ago and was professor of history at Swarthmore College from 1871 to 1880, coming to the University of Minnesota faculty in 1880 and retiring as professor emeritus in 1909.

The People’s Press; “Marie Sanford Dies Suddenly in Washington; Was Best Known Woman in State of Minnesota”; Owatonna, Minn.; April 23, 1920; p. 1.
