On This Date in Minnesota History: May 25

May 25, 1905 – A young man named Herman Speff, from Cokato, working for Mrs. Deal, and a young girl about 15 years of age, named Sidensticher, whose father resides near Wheaton, were found three miles south near the railroad tracks this afternoon. The young man was dead, having been shot in the mouth with a revolver, and the girl seriously wounded with two or three bullets in her abdomen.

The girl is still alive and claims that she had killed Speff and shot herself, and that she wished to die as they wanted to die together.

She borrowed the revolver from a Wheaton hardware store this afternoon.

The coroner, sheriff and county attorney are on the scene. It seems to be a complicated love affair.

The Minneapolis Tribune; “Murder at Wheaton; Young Girl Confesses to Shooting Lover; And Then Attempting to Kill Herself as the Two Wished to Die Together—Complicated Love Affair.”; May 26, 1905; p. 1.

May 22, 2011 – “Two days of threatening skies turned furious over the Twin Cities on [this date], unleashing at least three tornado touchdowns in the metro area, killing one person in Minneapolis, injuring at least 30 others, knocking out power to thousands and leading to a curfew and school closings in north Minneapolis. In the hardest-hit area, Minneapolis' Jordan neighborhood, downed trees, snapped power lines and pieces of roofs littered streets and yards.”

May 19, 1904 – Because J. S. Bangs, manager of Swift & Co.’s plant at South St. Paul, refused to dismiss a nonunion butcher who was employed in the pork department, 229 union butchers went out on strike today at noon. The men say that they will not return until the man has been put out, and the management insisted today that he would remain.

J. S. Bangs said today that the trouble only concerned the men in the pork department, and that he did not think the strike would extend to the other departments.

The strikers are members of the Amalgamated Butchers and Meat Cutters’ Union of America, which was organized last year, and which includes all the butchers at the South St. Paul plant. The union was formally recognized a year ago, when schedules were adopted and the packing plants of Chicago, Omaha and South St. Paul were placed under union regulation.

The local union has a membership of 1,200, all of whom are employed at South St. Paul, and if the trouble in the pork department is not adjusted within a few days a general strike may occur.

The Saint Paul Globe; “South St. Paul Butchers Strike; Men in Pork Department of Swift & Company’s Plant Walk Out.”; May 20, 1904; p. 10.
