December 4, 1928 - A bomb planted in St. Paul's Irish Godfather Dan Hogan's Paige coupe in the white stucco garage behind his home at 1607 7th Street West, Saint Paul, exploded, killing the owner of the Green Dragon saloon¹ and “well-known figure in the Twin Cities underworld.”<sup>2

December 3, 1896 – Due to the presence of scarlet fever in Alexandria (Minn.), “all churches and schools have been closed for a week. No public meetings of any kind will be allowed. There are presently twelve cases, all of a mild form.”

December 2, 2009 – Tom Petters was convicted by a federal trial jury in St. Paul “of orchestrating a $3.65 billion Ponzi scheme. Specifically, Petters, who was originally indicted in December 2008, was found guilty of 10 counts of wire fraud, three counts of mail fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and five counts of money laundering.”

On This Date in Minnesota History: December 1

December 1, 1982 - Minneapolis-St. Paul implemented a 911 system on this date that was reportedly the first multi-county Enhanced system in the country. It served the seven surrounding counties of Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington. The system was later expanded to include Isanti and Chisago counties and is still, geographically, the largest Enhanced 911 system in the country.

November 30, 1996 — “While playing ‘Tiptoe through the Tulips’ at a gala benefit at The Woman's Club of Minneapolis, singer Tiny Tim [suffered] a heart attack on stage and [died] later at Hennepin County Medical Center.”

On This Date in Minnesota History: November 29

November 29, 1995 – Almost 20 years after shooting Lake City, Minn., Mayor Wilmer Strickland and his wife Verona to death in their home, former next-door neighbor John Claypool’s guilty conscious caused him to confess that he had murdered them when he was 14-years-old because he wanted to see what it was like to kill. “Under state guidelines, Claypool [would] serve about 10 years in prison.”
