On This Date in Minnesota History: January 1

January 1, 1917 - This New Year’s Day began the fiftieth year of Minneapolis as an incorporated city. In 1867, when the population was not in excess of 10,000, the city was incorporated. Five years later the town of St. Anthony on the east side of the river, was combined with Minneapolis. Dorilus Morrison was the first mayor after the incorporation of 1867.

The Minneapolis Morning Tribune; “Minneapolis Celebrates Her Fiftieth Birthday”; Jan. 2, 1917; p. 2.
