On This Date in Minnesota History: May 10

May 10, 1917 – Sheriff Andrew Johnson received an advance announcement of the coming draft registry of all males in Beltrami County from the adjunct general of the state, under the act of the government authorities. All registry will be in the various voting precincts of the county and under control of a board consisting of the sheriff, county auditor and county physician.

The polls will be at the regular polling places and the one in charge of the registry must be a qualified citizen and competent to perform duties required of him, and the following are the necessary requirements:

Registrar Qualifications
(a) The Registrars selected must be competent clerks whose handwriting is neat and legible.
(b) Registrars shall be selected with regard to their qualifications for the duties prescribed herein.
(c) Registrars should be residents of the precinct for which they are appointed and they should be persons who have lived long enough in those precincts to be well acquainted with the inhabitants thereof.
(d) Registrars must be citizens of the U.S. or persons (not alien enemies) who have declared their intention to become citizens of the U.S.

Patriotic Service
One thing called attention to specifically is that the man in charge of the registry poll must be willing to perform the service free, as a part of his patriotic duty to his country. The same is to be done throughout the U.S.
