May 8, 1998 – “The tobacco industry agreed to pay $6.6 billion to settle a suit with the state of Minnesota as the state's lawsuit was about to go to a jury. The settlement included restrictions on sales and marketing with payments spread over 25 years. Minnesota became the fourth state to settle with the tobacco industry over the costs of treating smoking-related illnesses.”
