On This Date in Minnesota History: June 30

June 30, 2011 – Split Rock Lighthouse was designated as a National Historic Landmark on this date.1 The lighthouse was completed in 1910 on the North Shore of Lake Superior in response to a large 1905 storm that destroyed or damaged about 29 vessels, killed 36 seamen and caused property losses of approximately $1.75 million on Lake Superior.2
