On This Date in Minnesota History: May 26

May 26, 1897 – “A terrible accident occurred [on this date] at Hermantown [Minn.], seven miles from Duluth. Frank Lucek, a farmer living there, was thawing some dynamite to be used in clearing his land of stumps. He was heating it over a fire when it exploded, tearing the house almost to pieces and killing Lucek and two young sons. His wife and another small son escaped alive but are badly hurt. What remained of the house caught fire and was destroyed.”
