Minn., on this date, actor “Gig Young won an Academy Award for his performance as
a slimy dance-marathon emcee in the 1969 film They Shoot Horses, Don't They?”1 “He took the name ‘Gig Young’ from the character
he played in ‘The Gay Sisters.’ His films include ‘Game of Death,’ ‘Young at
Heart,’ ‘The Hindenburg,’ ‘The Elite Killer,’ and [‘The Desk Set’ with
Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy]. His work on television includes ‘The
Rogues.’ He shot and killed his fifth wife, German actress Kim Schmidt, after 3
weeks of marriage, then committed suicide.”2
