March 3, 1891 – “Ely, a city on the
Vermilion range, platted as a village in 1887, incorporated as a city [on this
date], was named in honor of Arthur Ely, of Cleveland, Ohio, one of the
financial promoters of the construction of the Duluth and Iron Range railroad,
which was opened to traffic here in July, 1888. He also was prominent in the
development of the iron mines at Tower.”
