On This Date in Minnesota History: April 23
April 23, 1897 – “Minnesota
state government allocated $5,000 to open the Gillette State Hospital for
Crippled Children in St. Paul, named for Dr. Arthur J. Gillette. It was the
first state-funded hospital of its kind in the nation.”1
