On This Date in Minnesota History: May 13

May 13, 1963 – William (Pat) Reilly, “one-time crony of former Public Enemy No. 1, John Dillinger,” died on this date of bronchial pneumonia in his room at the St. Regis hotel, 201 Kellogg Blvd, St. Paul. He was buried at public expense by the Ramsey County Welfare Dept., as the county “is charged with providing a ‘decent and proper burial’” of indigent persons.

“Reilly served a federal prison sentence for harboring Dillinger in his house while the Dillinger gang was headquartered in this area. He also served a prison term for robbery.”

St. Paul Pioneer Press; “County to Bury Reilly, Crony of Dillinger’s”; May 16, 1963; p. 18.
