March
22, 1922 – Three cracksmen engaged early today in a battle with
Minneapolis detectives at the Standard Oil headquarters. The trio held up
watchman King, bound him and drew in into a room. They succeeded in opening a
vault, but inside found two safes. After opening one, which contained only
papers, they started to work on the second safe, which contained $10,000.
Meanwhile King was able to free one hand, wiggle over to a desk, secure a paper knife and cut his bonds. He called to the street summoning police, who arrived before the robbers opened the other safe. After an exchange of shots, the robbers escaped.
